St. Joseph School Sophomores Lead Charity Project Serving Hale Anuenue Residents
January 29, 2026
Hilo, Hawaiʻi, St. Joseph School sophomore theology students recently completed a student led charity project focused on building meaningful relationships with the residents of Hale Anuenue, a long term care community in Hilo.

As part of their theology curriculum, students planned and carried out an on site visit centered on time, attention, and companionship. Students engaged residents in watercolor painting, bracelet making, and card games, creating a calm and welcoming space grounded in shared presence.

This project emphasized Catholic social teaching on human dignity, service, and respect for elders. Through simple acts and sustained interaction, students showed genuine care for the kupuna of the community while learning the importance of responsibility and attentiveness to others.

Facility members and other residents observed that the students were fully engaged and respectful, noting the positive energy and sincerity the students brought to the visit. The project was entirely student directed, from planning to execution, allowing students to practice leadership, empathy, and intentional service.

St. Joseph School remains committed to forming students who live out faith through action, strengthen ties with the local community, and honor the wisdom and dignity of Hawaiʻi’s elders.
