St. Joseph School Students Celebrate Hawaiian Culture and Faith in Unique Christmas Fundraiser
December 16, 2024
The St. Joseph School Student Catholic Campus Ministry embraced a meaningful and creative new skill this week, combining Hawaiian tradition and the Christmas spirit. Students gathered native Hawaiian plants and lovingly crafted them into beautiful Christmas wreaths, which they sold at neighboring parishes to raise funds for upcoming events.
Special thanks go to Fr. Steve Macedo of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and Fr. Niko Atonio of Malia Puka O Kalani Church for welcoming the students into their parishes and giving them the opportunity to share their handmade creations with parishioners. The fundraiser was a success, as students not only raised funds but also connected with the community through their labor of love.
Proceeds from the wreath sales will support the students’ participation in two impactful events:
- Big Island Youth Day (March 2025)
- Annual Christian Leadership Conference on Oahu (Summer 2025)
Both gatherings are vital opportunities for spiritual growth, leadership development, and fellowship, helping students deepen their Catholic faith while fostering lasting connections with peers.
“This was more than just a fundraiser—it was a chance for students to work together, learn new skills, and give back to the community in a creative and culturally significant way,” said Mrs. Chrislyn Villena, Campus Ministry Advisor. “The joy of crafting these wreaths and seeing the support from parishioners truly brought the spirit of Christmas to life.”
The St. Joseph School Catholic Campus Ministry looks forward to continuing its mission of service, faith, and leadership. Mahalo to everyone who supported this year’s fundraiser and helped make it a memorable and meaningful experience!
