Pu'u Ōʻō Ranch Excursion

October 16, 2024

The 7th and 8th graders enjoyed an enriching excursion to Puʻu ʻŌʻō Ranch, where they explored the thriving Native Hawaiian ecosystems within the Piʻihonua Ahupuaʻa. Surrounded by breathtaking views of Mauna Kea and native plants and animals, students gained valuable insights into the invasive species threatening these ecosystems.

A highlight of the trip was capturing videos of wild horses galloping down the mountains. Students also had the unforgettable experience of participating in Hawaiian paniolo horseback lessons, which deepened their appreciation for this important cultural tradition. Here are some of the highlights of the trip expressed by the junior high students.

“I learned that the trails taken by earlier paniolo helped them to transport cattle from one side of the island to another.”

“The scenery was breathtaking. I wish I couldʻve stayed longer.”

“The story that resonated with me the most was the story of how Queen Kapiʻolani defied Pele, proving that our Christian God is real, and in turn converting many Hawaiians to Christianity.

“I learned that our uka ecosystems are threatened by the Gorse bush, that damages our wildlife.”

Overall, the trip provided a unique blend of education, adventure, and connection to the land.
