As the sun sets and Makaliʻi (the constellation Pleiades) rises on the eastern horizon, the Hawaiian New Year, known as Makahiki, begins. Spanning four consecutive lunar months, usually from mid-November to late January or February, this is a time set aside for tribute, harvest, sport and play.
Makahiki also signifies a time of rest and rejuvenation. It serves as a period to fortify existing bonds and forge new relationships.
With the holiday season fast approaching, we can all appreciate the importance of spending time with ʻohana, regrouping and strengthening connections. During this time of peace, we offer up prayers of prosperity, wellness and joy. May we all continue to be showered with blessings and the Lord’s hand of protection be over us always.
Hauʻoli Makahiki Hou!
