Hawaiian Language makes a come-back; hosts Makahiki Event

St. Joseph Schools’ administration surveyed the Jr./Sr. High School students during the 2015-2016 school year regarding the foreign language options that they would like to have added to their curriculum.  The majority voted for a Hawaiian Language course in addition to the Spanish and Japanese Language courses that are currently offered.  Mrs. Susan Wehrsig, Vice Principal of the Jr./Sr. High School said, “It has been well over five years that Hawaiian Language was offered,” and the students are embracing the opportunity.  The St. Joseph School Hawaiian language class hosted a Makahiki event that took place on November 7, 2016.  Students learned the symbolism of Makahiki and the celebration of this event in its entirety.  Students were given a Makahiki activity or game that they needed to research and teach to the guests who participated in the event. “Through this project I want my students to gain a cultural understanding of the Hawaiian people and indulge and experience some of the things they did in the past” said Hawaiian Language instructor, Kumu Maile Kipapa.  Her students also learned leadership skills since they were in control of the event and will present their projects on Thursday, November 10, 2016.
